    International Adjustment with Wage Rigidity

    Two of the puzzling macroeconomic phenomena of the 1970s have been the persistent stagnation in Europe, and the disagreement between the U.S. and Europe on the feasibility of recovery by demand expansion. This paper develops the hypothesis that the source of both the stagnation and the policy differences is money-wage stickiness in the U.S. and real-wage stickiness in Europe and Japan. A real wage which is sticky above its equilibrium level in Europe and Japan would account for stagnation and infeasibility of recovery by demand expansion. The theoretical models are developed in both the one-commodity and two-commodity-bundle cases. The empirical results confirm that in the U.S. the nominal wage adjusts slowly toward equilibrium, while in Germany, Italy, Japan, and the U.K. the real wage adjusts slowly.

    Aligning Cognitive Complexity Models: Bridging Development Across Educational and Supervisory Contexts

    Cognitive complexity is a requisite skill for mental health professionals, as they routinely face complex, ambiguous tasks such as working within an evidence based practice framework in ways that bridge clients’ subjective experiences with relevant psychotherapeutic outcome research. Multiple models for conceptualizing and promoting cognitive complexity development in educational and supervisory settings have been articulated, and the similarities across these models is striking. The purpose of this article is to: 1) introduce readers to King and Kitchener’s (1994) Reflective Judgement model of educational development and 2) demonstrate the striking alignment between the Reflective Judgement model and prominent developmental models of supervision, with the aim of providing a seamless framework that spans educational and supervisory contexts

    The tort/contract boundary: great divide or grand illusion

    This thesis considers the difference between contract and the tort of negligence. It compares the traditional view of the distinction with a more contemporary view, and concludes that the two areas of law are becoming interrelated. Three main aspects of contract and tort are compared; the nature of the liability, the scope of the liability and the extent of the remedy. The historical origins of the two areas of law are explored, as are the ideological concepts which underpin them. There is also an investigation of how the courts in the UK deal with the relationship between contract and tort in both contracts for services and contracts of service; these being two areas where there is a considerable overlap between contractual and tortious liability. The thesis argues that contract and the tort of negligence are based on common historical roots and underpinned by common ideologies. In both cases, the courts seek to decide liability on the basis of 'reasonableness', a subjective concept which is determined according to their own criteria. This is seen as related to such factors as the bargaining power of the litigants, and their opportunities to secure alternative means of protection against liability. It is suggested that this is more important than whether the action is brought in contract or tort. The nature of the contract/tort divide is considered in the alternative jurisdiction of New Zealand, in order to see how it deals with the problems posed. The thesis concludes by considering whether an alternative model could be constructed in order to explain the current nature of the relationship between contract and tort, and what type of relationship should exist

    Metric connections in projective differential geometry

    We search for Riemannian metrics whose Levi-Civita connection belongs to a given projective class. Following Sinjukov and Mikes, we show that such metrics correspond precisely to suitably positive solutions of a certain projectively invariant finite-type linear system of partial differential equations. Prolonging this system, we may reformulate these equations as defining covariant constant sections of a certain vector bundle with connection. This vector bundle and its connection are derived from the Cartan connection of the underlying projective structure.Comment: 10 page

    Functional determinants for the scalar Laplacian on spherical caps and slices, flat balls, shells and generalised cylinders are evaluated in two, three and four dimensions using conformal techniques. Both Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions are allowed for. Some effects of non-smooth boundaries are discussed; in particular the 3-hemiball and the 3-hemishell are considered.     End-to-End Localization and Ranking for Relative Attributes

    We propose an end-to-end deep convolutional network to simultaneously localize and rank relative visual attributes, given only weakly-supervised pairwise image comparisons. Unlike previous methods, our network jointly learns the attribute's features, localization, and ranker. The localization module of our network discovers the most informative image region for the attribute, which is then used by the ranking module to learn a ranking model of the attribute. Our end-to-end framework also significantly speeds up processing and is much faster than previous methods. We show state-of-the-art ranking results on various relative attribute datasets, and our qualitative localization results clearly demonstrate our network's ability to learn meaningful image patches.Comment: Appears in European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV), 201

    We prove that under suitable assumptions, the constant term in the Green function of the Paneitz-Branson operator on a compact Riemannian manifold (M,g)(M,g) is positive unless (M,g)(M,g) is conformally diffeomophic to the standard sphere.
